Matt started piano lessons started at age 4, and continued for 15 years afterward, which instilled in him a deep enjoyment of classical and sacred music, and a great love of the piano itself as a musical instrument.
His interest in mechanical things and natural “hands-on” dexterity provided a spring-board for learning the craft of piano technology.
His first formal training was through a correspondence course based in the USA. Then practical apprenticeship training was provided by Rory Fader (North Vancouver), with other coaching and assistance from Paul Brown (Vancouver), Karl Verhnjak (Surrey), and Ted Sambell (Banff). These all were registered members of the Piano Technicians Guild, and very experienced in their craft.
Matt passed his examinations in 2001 to become a Registered Piano Technician with the Piano Technicians Guild, www.ptg.org and continues to attend workshops and training seminars with industry professionals and manufacturers to maintain current knowledge and skills. He has also helped facilitate and teach at local Canadian Association of Piano Technician (CAPT) seminars.
Having received brand-specific training for some of the most sought-after piano names in the musical world (Yamaha, Kawai, Steinway, Boston, Petrof) he keeps in touch with the latest service procedures to draw out the best performance from each individual instrument. Matt finds the greatest satisfaction in seeing his customers getting the full enjoyment of musical fulfillment from playing their pianos
Matt is also his church pianist at Westsyde Fellowship Church and is known to occasionally play at weddings, community functions, or by special request, although he does not consider himself a musician for hire. He plays for the love of music and the Glory of God.
